Job description

HISTORY AND CURRENT

Since its establishment in 1839, the First Presbyterian Church of Houston (FPC) has played a vital role in shaping the spiritual landscape of Houston and Texas.

Witnessing Houston's evolution from an early transportation hub (rail and shipping, later aviation) into one of the world's leading cities, FPC diligently dispatched church planters throughout the greater Houston area and across Texas. Rejecting complacency, the church's pastors and elders consistently prioritized spiritual growth, evangelism, discipleship, and missions, demonstrating a heartfelt commitment to serving the least fortunate in the local community.

While boasting a rich history and being recognized as a "legacy church" in the community, FPC exudes a laid-back and welcoming atmosphere. The genuine care among individuals is apparent, fostering swift connections in this community. The incoming Student Ministry Pastor/Director can look forward to substantial support and enthusiasm from the dedicated congregation, known for proudly highlighting the achievements of the youth program throughout its history.

First Presbyterian Church aims for worship to be a Spirit-led, transformative experience with God that resonates with its members and welcomes new worshippers. The goal is to impart teachings in practical ways, enabling the application of truth and fostering life transformation. The church is committed to offering growth opportunities for individuals of all ages and stages, achieved through diverse programs, small groups, mentoring, and special events.

The arrival of Senior Pastor Curtis Broznan in 2023 marks a thrilling new chapter for FPC. Anticipating further growth, the church plans to fill key staff positions in 2024, expecting that the infusion of new personalities and ideas will contribute to the already dynamic momentum. As more individuals and families explore the vibrant happenings at First Presbyterian, the excitement continues to build.

CURRENT STUDENT CULTURE

First Presbyterian is very much a legacy church in the community and the student ministry has a long history of being known as one of the best in the region. Currently the student ministry has about 30 middle school students who regularly participate and another 60 high school students in weekly attendance.

In addition to great retreats, camps and missions, the ministry currently offers Sunday morning gatherings for both middle school and high school.

Middle School students meet for their youth group (called D2-- "Diving Deeper") on Sunday evenings-- this consistes of hang out times, games, a brief review of what is being studied and then about 30 minutes of diving into the study at a deeper level in small groups.

High School students meet on Wednesday evenings in area homes with grade and gender based small groups. The small groups have been a highlight for many, as they get to know each other and caring adults who pour into them.

Job requirements

CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

"DO LIFE" MENTALITY

Perhaps the most significant requirement in Student Ministries is a highly relational individual who prioritizes people over processes while keeping a focus on organizational objectives. While it's impractical to establish relationships with every person in the ministry, the goal is to have a leader with a natural ability to connect relationally and make individuals feel recognized.

The paid staff is praying for someone who understands them well and exemplifies a life-on-life style of ministry, enabling them to do the same with volunteers, pre-teens, and teens.

LEADER OF LEADERS

FPC boasts a strong foundation of staff leadership with a team of four full-time members in position. The Student Ministry Pastor/Director will supervise multiple employees reporting directly to them, with roles currently segmented between middle school and high school, featuring both male and female leaders. Furthermore, a part-time youth ministry coordinator efficiently handles various administrative responsibilities.

Each team member has pinpointed specific areas for personal and leadership growth, offering an excellent starting point for the incoming team leader.

VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP

As First Presbyterian continues to expand, it becomes crucial for the incoming Student Ministry Pastor/Director to develop a scalable ministry structure capable of growing alongside the church. Although the ministry currently relies on a small, dedicated group of volunteers, it is imperative for this team to expand to meet the needs of Student Ministries.

The leaders aspire to receive training in effective tools and methods to ensure safety, engage with new youth, and collaborate with parents during the formative years. The goal is to equip participants to love Jesus and others effectively. Given the high value placed on Small Groups, there is a need for the expansion of training for discipleship group leaders, ensuring that everyone feels adequately prepared to serve.

RE-ENVISION

FPC is in search of a dynamic and visionary leader capable of cultivating leaders, casting vision, and crafting strategies to foster growth within the Student Ministry. Over the few years, there have been significant changes in the overall Student Ministry at FPC, with staff members transitioning out of their roles. The incoming Pastor/Director at FPC will face the typical challenges associated with these changes but will also have the opportunity to actively contribute to shaping and defining the path forward.
